The Spitfire society was founded in March, 1984 by former Spitfire pilot Group Captain David Green RAF (Ret'd). Its original purpose was to link people throughout the world whose lives had in some way been concerned with the legendary World War 2 fighter. Since achieving the status of a nationally Registered Charity (No. 299033) the Society has widened its horizons. It now supports the interest of the many aviation enthusiasts of both sexes and all ages who wish to support its aims.
The Society aims to:
The achievement of these goals depends upon a strong, strong, broadly-based and supportive membership. In return members are able to indulge their interests by:
The Society's associated organisation, Spitfire Enterprises Ltd., exists to offer for sale by mail order or directly at events a range of attractive sales items.
A President and up to 12 Vice-Presidents hold honorary offices. All are distinguished persons well-known in the rich field of British Aviation. In addition there are two appointed Trustees.
The executive committee, currently based in Southampton, England, is responsible for the policies and plans, management and administration of the Society and its members worldwide. It normally consists of 12 departmental officers. The Executive Committee is assisted by regional volunteers throughout the United Kingdom and elsewhere. The Spitfire Society and Spitfire Enterprises Ltd. are both run on an entirely voluntary basis. Most of the committee members and Regional volunteers work largely from their homes but a small number who live within easy reach of head office meet there twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 9.30 a.m. and midday. Outside these hours telephone messages can be recorded or can be sent by FAX. The number for both 'phone and FAX messages is 023 8022 7343
Membership is open to any person of any nationality. He/she may have had personal experience as a pilot, designer, constructor, researcher, historian or restorer. Indeed, any person who is keen to support the aims of the Society may apply for membership.
The current subscription is £15 (UK or non-UK unless by UK bank transfer; see application form for details) renewable without reminder on the anniversary of first registration. There is now also a Junior Membership, at a reduced subscription rate, open to all persons under the age of 21, or in full time education beyond that age.
